The Amazon rainforest in simply staggering. The numbers
are the easiest way to put its size into perspective, the forest itself
covers and area of more that 5 million square kilometres (1.2 billion
acres), it covers 9 countries (60% of it is in Brazil) and makes up
the worlds largest and most diverse natural habitat on earth with its

Over 1/3 of all the recorded species that live on earth today are native to the Amazon region and this includes the following: over 3000 species of fish, 428 amphibians, 427 mammals, 380 species of reptile, nearly 1300 types of birds and an incredible 40,000 species of plants and more are being discovered daily. The Amazon region is also home to the largest areas of land on earth that have never been explored or altered in any way by man. |
Visiting the Amazon can be tricky, there are few roads, very little tourist infrastructure, and due to its size you are very limited to what you will see. There are however tours and companies that can take you to certain regions giving you the opportunity to experience this true wilderness.
